Beach Activities and Sea sports
The main activity on the beaches of Koh Samui of course is soaking up the sunshine. However, for the more active there are several other beach and sea activities. Beaches such as Chaweng, Coral Cove bay and Laem Set all have coral reefs just off shore that are good for snorkeling. There are several dive shops around the island that offer PADI courses and fun dives to such spots as Sail Rock, Chumphon Pinnacles and Ang Thong National Park.
For those with a nautical bent there are a couple of places in Bophut that rent out sail boats. And for those who like more extreme sports it is possible to wake board and kite board in Laem Set.
Other popular beach activities include kayaking, beach volleyball and just paddling in the emerald blue waters around Koh Samui.
Places to visit
Koh Samui has an interesting history that dates back to the dawn of man and the Stone Age. The Chinese influence is evident on the island in the fisherman’s homes in Bophut that have been turned into boutique bars, cafes and shops. In the main town of Nathon there is also a colorful Chinese temple worth visiting.
The man tourist attraction in Koh Samui is the Big Buddha golden statue in Bang Rak that stands at the top of a wide staircase. There is also an impressive temple in Plai Laem with a giant 18 arm Buddha statue. For those with a fascination in the morbid there is a mummified monk in the temple at Bang Kao.
The towns of Chaweng and Lamai have the best nightlife on the island. Here you will find beach bars, night clubs with DJs and live music, reggae bars and go go bars. There’s cuisine on offer from all over the world. There’s Samba shows at Zico’s in Chaweng. Both spots also have Muay Thai fight nights.
The principal town of Nathon has some great covered markets that sell cheap clothes and souvenirs. Chaweng has lots of shops selling souvenirs of Thailand and more exclusive items. Big C Supermarket and Tesco Lotus sell virtually everything from washing machines to foreign beer. Fisherman’s Village in Bophut have a few boutique shops for those looking for something special.
Near Maenam there is a full size golf course. Near Bophut there is a go kart course and on Laem Set beach there is an Aquarium and Tiger Show. Near Taling Ngam there is a snake show that is not for the faint hearted.
For those who want to see something of the interior of the island there is a company called Canopy Adventures with an office in Chaweng that has a series of tree houses connected by zip lines.
