How to Maintain Normal Blood Sugar Levels and Be Diabetes Free

If you have just discovered that your blood sugar levels are higher than normal and you have diabetes, you may be scared, wondering if you’d ever be able to reverse the disease and get your blood glucose back to normal.

The good news is that yes, it’s certainly possible to reverse diabetes and be healthy again, but the bad news is that it takes commitment and hard work to make be successful.  If you are hoping for a quick-fix solution or a magic pill to take care of your disease, then it’s not going to happen. You cannot keep living your life as usual and hope for a different result.

If you have seen any of the Biggest Loser episodes, than you saw people working extremely hard to lose weight and reverse many of the chronic conditions associated with obesity, including diabetes. One contestant got rid of diabetes and restored normal blood sugar levels in front of millions of viewers, and had been declared diabetes-free by the physician who monitors contestants’ health.

Of course, implementing such a routine is not realistic for most people.  Most people cannot afford to take weeks off from their work to focus exclusively on working out with personal trainers, 5-6 hours per day and having a team of dieticians and professional cooks prepare their meals.

It’s also not necessary. With proper commitment, it’s certainly possible to make the necessary changes and restore good health.

One tip that is easy to implement is to eat loads of raw plant foods. Eating loads of fresh vegetables, greens and even fruits is a great way to start losing weight quickly and restoring good health. The good news is, you can eat as much as you want of these foods!

The way to do it is to start increasing the percentage of calories eaten from raw foods to at least 70-80 per cent each day, or even higher. Go to the farmer’s market and load your shopping cart with leafy greens, all kids of vegetables – tomatoes, cucumbers, radishes, carrots, broccoli, etc. Start each meal with a huge salad, or a raw blended soup.  Replace snacks and even some meals with green smoothies.  Replace deserts with fresh fruits.

You can still eat other foods that you crave. These cravings will not disappear any time soon. Don’t tell yourself that you cannot eat a slice of pizza or cake – this doesn’t work and will only make you want it even more. Just tell yourself that you can have a small piece of pizza or cake AFTER you eat your salad and green smoothie.

If you’ve been inactive for a long time, start with walking. Don’t tell yourself it’s going to be hard. Make it fun. Borrow an audio book to listen to on your walks or invite a friend to join you, and get out of the house for at least 30-40 minutes. Join the gym, take a zumba class, or invest in home exercise equipment. The trick is to do whatever appeals to you and do it consistently.
