Hey fellow trail runners. I want to try and share with you today some tips on wide running shoes. I personally have wide feet and so I know how challenging it can be to find wide running shoes that fit properly. Over the years I have experimented in finding out ways to make sure that I always get the best possible fit in my wide running shoe. Especially in wide trail running shoes. However, the information that I’ve gathered over the years can be used to find the best fit for any type of wide shoe not just trail running shoes. So let’s have a look see.
Understanding shoe sizing can be quite an art. Especially as there are different measurements being used around the world. I’ll try and give you some idea as to the measurement of mens wide running shoes and womens wide running shoes. Assuming that most of you are from North America, Australia, New Zealand, UK and Europe I’ll skip out on talking about the Asian sizing system. Boy, this stuff can get complicated. It is the sizing or length of the shoe that is most varied. The width which is what we are most concerned with as far as wide running shoes goes is quite easy to explain. So let me start with that first.
Wide width running shoes come in one of 4 ways of measuring. The first is the Mondopoint system which just uses mm as width measurements, this is not a very common measuring system of wide trail running shoes although it is the international standard and is used by NATO and other military organizations. The 3 other systems are simpler but not quite as accurate. They use letters and number to measure the width of the shoe. These are: A, B, C, D, E, EE, EEE, EEEE, F, G or 4A, 3A, 2A, A, B, C, D, E, 2E, 3E, 4E, 5E, 6E or lastly N (narrow), M (medium) or R (regular), W (wide).
These numbered/lettered systems are probably the ones that most of us are familiar with when looking for running shoes for wide feet. My personal favorite is New Balance wide running shoes. I have a pair of the New Balance Men’s MT572 Outdoor All Terrain Trail Shoe size 8.5 4E if you must know :O) This great shoe is also available for women as the New Balance Women’s WT572 Outdoor All Terrain Trail Shoe.
So I hope you’ve found this article on wide running shoes helpful. I’ll try and go into a little more detail at another time, and I’ll be sure to offer a wide running shoes review in an upcoming post. Now get out there and run for your life. It’s good for you!
