Meditation trains the mind or self-induces a mode of consciousness in order to realize some benefit, and it also encourages awareness. The word “meditation” comes from two Latin words: meditari which means to think, to dwell upon, and to exercise the mind and mederi which means to heal. All people can meditate each and every day of their lives. Observing your breath is meditation; listening to a soft music is meditation. As long as these activities are free from any other distraction to the mind, meditation is effective. One of the major benefits people experience from meditation is relaxation. People often think of meditation as only a tool or a way to relax themselves. It is an act of thinking about something very carefully and deeply for a long time. You can meditate for as long as you can maintain your focus—or for only a few minutes.
Generally, with practice, it becomes easier to get into and stay in a meditative mode, and time can pass without you realizing it.
The following are a few steps in learning how to do simple meditation. (1) Find a suitable quiet place for meditation. It’s best to have some space and time to yourself where you have a better chance of fully relaxing your mind. (2) Sit in an upright position. Whether you sit on a stool or on the floor, sit upright and at a comfortable position. Sitting upright helps the body to relax and enhances posture. (3) Energy the body is an energy field. It is important to have enough energy to meditate. If you try meditating while lying down, you are more likely to fall asleep than entering into a high state of meditation. (4) Relaxation. Let go of any tension in your body and try to be fully aware of the present moment. In meditating, it is important to switch off and relax. (5) Breathing. Be fully conscious of your breathing. Feel that you are breathing in peace. It is the most helpful aid to meditation. (6) Calm mind. Let thoughts come to you; don’t chase after them. When worries come, let them go and focus. (7) Put your heart on it to be fully successful in meditating. Have a strong faith in everything that you do, and also, if you really want to achieve something, make effort on it. There are deeper levels you can go to in meditation, such as learning to feel connected with the universal energy that makes up all life and a good view towards the world but focusing on deep long breaths is a great start.
