Last year Google introduced their wildly successful free cell phone tracker application called Google Latitude.  Many people installed this application in the first week.  As a matter of fact over a million people installed and started using the service in the first week alone.  So far there are almost four million people who are making use of this free cell phone locator application.  A few people have wondered how Google Latitude is able to pinpoint their location so quickly and easily with their service.

It’s not as simple as simply saying that they use the GPS receiver in the cell phone to locate you.  Google actually makes use of three different methods of tracking to pinpoint your location with the Google Latitude free cell phone locator app.

The first and most obvious method that they use is GPS.  GPS technology in cell phones is quite accurate and this will provide the most accurate location of your cell phone.  This is the first method that Google Latitude attempts to use to find your location. If it is unable to find you with this method, it moves on to another method.

The third method that Google Latitude free cell phone tracker uses is called triangulation.  With this method, the application uses the cell phone  to locate the three nearest cell phone towers.  With this information the phone is able to use a complex formula to give a rough estimate of the location of the cell phone.

For all three methods, the Google Latitude free cell phone locator will only work if the phone is in a covered service area.  That doesn’t mean that you can’t be roaming with your phone but there must be cell phone service for the for the application to work.
