The Different Types of Hummus Recipes

Hummus is something that is very easy to prepare at home.  When you do this, not only are you able to create a delicious snack, it is also going to be much better for you that many commercially prepared dips.  There are many different types of hummus that you can make, so there is sure to be something that suits you regardless of what your tastes are.  Once you find the right recipe hummus is very easy to make.  Let’s take a look at some of the options for preparing hummus.

Classic hummus is made with garbanzo beans which are also called chick peas.  Often it is prepared with just the beans, garlic, lemon juice and tahini.  However, it can also be amended with other foods.  Some types of classic hummus include green chili and cilantro, roasted red pepper, sun-dried tomatoes and parsley hummus.  You can add in most any ingredient that you enjoy!

To make your dip really special, try topping it with za’atar.  This is a Middle Eastern spice blend that is quite simple to make at home.  You just need a mixture of sesame seeds, garlic powder, thyme and salt.  Serve your dip with either fresh cut vegetables or whole wheat pita chips.  While it is certainly convenient to buy pita chips at the grocery store, they are typically loaded with fat.  Additionally, many brands also have preservatives that you would be better off avoiding.  It is very simple to make your own pita chips simply by toasted pita bread in your oven.  First brush it with olive oil or spray it with olive oil spray.  You can add a little salt and pepper if you like and also some cayenne pepper.  Bake for about 10 minutes in a 400 degree oven.
