The Lowdown on Maternity Nursing Bras

If you’re currently pregnant or you’ve just had a baby and started breast feeding, you will soon need several maternity /nursing bras. There are many factors to consider when you are choosing maternity bras and nursing bras – will you be sleeping in the bra? What sort of fastening do you prefer for easy access when breast feeding? What style and color do you prefer? What size do you need?

The most important thing you need to consider when choosing maternity bras is comfort. Pregnancy can make your breasts feel sore and uncomfortable as they grow to a larger size while making milk for your baby so it is very important to get a good fit and choose a style that feels comfortable against your skin. Many women find it more comfortable to sleep in a bra and if this is the case with you, you will want to choose one of the very soft and flexible sleep bras designed for pregnancy which will give you some support when you are sleeping and also hold breast pads in place.

Nursing bras fasten usually either at the front between the cups or at the straps so you can unhook one cup at a time. Many women find that the side fastening bras are a better choice because they can be undone and refastened with just one hand and still provide some support while you are breast feeding. The other option if you have small breasts and do not need much support, or to wear in bed, is a stretchy style nursing bra which can just be pulled down rather than unfastening when you want to feed your baby.

Most women will go through at least a couple of different bra sizes during their pregnancy and nursing period so it is important to be measured regularly to ensure you are wearing the correct size bra. Ill fitting bras can be uncomfortable and even cause damage to the milk ducts which will make feeding difficult.
