A Few Tips For Making Your Own Glider Cushions

Now that your child is a little older, your glider chair can be used for things other than feeding, burping, and rocking your baby to sleep. One of the best ways to change the appearance of your chair is to replace the cushions. You can purchase new glider cushions or covers at retail stores, department stores, or specialty baby stores. You can even purchase them online from various retailers. But, you can do the same thing yourself with a little bit of time and for a fraction of the cost.

There are two things you will need to know before you begin. You need to decide if you will replace both the cover and the cushion of your glider chair. We will look at both these options.

It is much simpler, and cheaper, to recover your glider cushions. By keeping the cushion, you will reduce your cost and the chance for errors. Replacing the foam inside the cushion is the most expensive part of the process.

Just like any kind of fabric, foam material is purchased by the yard. This may seem inexpensive when you think about the average size of a chair or cushion. But, the cost will vary greatly depending on the thickness of the foam. Thicker foam, like the kind needed for a durable cushion, can be quite expensive but is worth the investment. If the cushion from your chair is worn out, you can always add thinner foam to the top; much like you would with a bed. You could also add filler material used for pillows and stuffed animals. If you make your own cushion, make sure you can replicate the exact size and shape of the original cushion or else it will not fit in your chair.

Making a cover for your cushion is very simple. You can create a template for your cover in two ways, either by copying the existing cover or by purchasing a pattern. At minimum, you will require three seams: one for each side and one for a zipper. If you want your cover to be more durable, rather than folding the material around the cushion, you can cut strips the length of each side and then stitch them together. Before beginning this process, make sure you can follow the pattern or copy the previous cover.

The materials you will need to make your own glider cushions are readily available. They can all be purchased at most fabric stores. When selecting your fabric, make sure to consider the long term needs. Buying a durable upholstery fabric is a great idea. The best suggestion is to make sure the fabric you select is machine washable. This will save much time and energy in the future.
