We’re constantly told how we need to reduce our carbon footprints and reduce energy consumption in the home and the same advice also applies to the business world. If you haven’t yet thought about how to make your company greener, here are ten easy changes you can make to reduce your company’s carbon footprint.
1. Saving Energy in the Workplace
Replace ordinary light bulbs with energy saving ones in the workplace environment. Make sure that your staff understands the important of turning off computers at the end of the day. Unplug all electrical equipment and find the best way of setting your office heating system to save even more energy.
2. The Paperless Office
While we have to accept that no offices are going to be totally paper free, it is possible to reduce the amount of paper you use by printing off only the most important documents. Save important emails as documents rather than printing them off.
Send empty printer cartridges to be recycled and recycle all waste paper. Switch to using recycled paper and refills for your printer as this limits how much you contribute to the country’s landfill problems.
4. Invest in Some Cups and Glasses
If you have a water cooler in your office then swap the plastic glasses for reusable receptacles. Replace any paper cups used for tea or coffee and switch to regular cups that can be used over and over again.
5. Going Green Saves Money
When you choose to reduce the amount of paper that you use, recycle and switch to energy saving bulbs, you will save money. According to figures from the Energy Saving Trust, you can save up to £45 a year in electricity when you switch to energy saving bulbs, and you’ll also spend a lot less on replacement light bulbs.
6. Don’t Let Your Waste Go to Waste
Invest in extra waste bins so that there are two for every desk as this will enable employees to separate ordinary trash from items that can be recycled.
7. Get Free Stuff
The internet has changed the way that all of us live our lives. If you need extra shelving or another filing cabinet don’t go out and spend until you’ve checked out free cycle and gum tree. These sites enable people to give stuff away for free or to swap what they don’t need for something that they do.
8. Office Insulation
Are you throwing money out of the window when it comes to heating your place of business? Make sure that windows and doors fit properly so that any heat you use is keeping your workplace at a comfortable temperature.
9. Get Educated
Read up on green business practices and discover other ways of reducing the carbon footprint of your business.
10. Evaluate Your Carbon Footprint
Invest in a carbon footprint calculator to see just how large a footprint your company is generating. Get together with another business to come up with more ways of running a green company.
