Weight Watchers, Obesity and Stomach Cancer

A comprehensive report linking nutrition and cancer states that obesity causes cancer, and thus, recommends avoidance of all processed foods including meats such as sausages and bacon. Sodium is also a contributing factor. A consumption of more than 6 grams of salt per day puts the health at high levels.

Before I continue, My spouse and i definitely prefer to mention the fact that I’m not really a weight loss expert or some big company like weight watchers or jennycraig at all. We merely used whichever proven and then relay the ideas to you.

The project director of the report Martin Wiseman commented that “the public has the concept how fats brings diabetes and heart diseases, however, they do not realize, how they also bring cancer. Although some of the foods carry a risk of cancer, most of them can be consumed in small quantities without putting the health at apparent dangers. Nonetheless, processed meats and salted foods do not have clear safe dose.

A good reason why everyone should avoid processed meats is the nitrates that these food products often contain. The nitrates are preservatives that stimulate the production of carcinogens named N-nitroso-compounds. Moreover, processed meats have high levels of salts, which are closely linked to stomach cancer.

The National Cancer Institute revealed that of the 1143 individuals with esophageal or stomach cancer and 695 healthy control subjects, 41% had obesity as the primary single contributor. The adenocarcinoma of the cardia region of the stomach was attributed largely to smoking with 45% risk. If smoking is a habit of an obese individual, the risk is as high as 56%.

Located on the left side of the abdomen under the diaphragm, the stomach is a hollow organ having a J shape. Its principal function is a completel breakdown of food beginning from the mouth and travels to the stomach through the muscular tube known as the esophagus. Besides digestion, the stomach also serves as a storage organ.

In the stomach, the digestion process is completed before the nutrients from the foods enter the duodenum, an initial portion of the small intestine that connects to the stomach, into the small intestine and large intestine. Finally, the nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream.

The stomach is flexible, which expands to allow eaten food entry. Its walls contain layers of muscles lined by cells that produce gastric juice or acid which contains pepsin for breaking down the protein, hydrochloric acid to kill bacteria and creates the most ideal environment for pepsin, and the intrinsic factor for vitamin B12 to get absorbed. Also in the stomach lining are glands that secret mucus which serves as a barrier to prevent the stomach from digesting itself.

The cancer begins in the cells in the stomach tissues. It happens when the normal cells in the stomach tissues make some uncontrollable changes which cause the tumor to grow. In some studies, they show that stomach ulcers or stomach polyps can lead to cancer. Stomach ulcers are inflamed areas of the stomach lining. It is also known as gastric ulcers. Stomach polyps, on the other hand, are non-cancerous round growth that protrudes into the stomach cavity.

Admittedly, the direct cause of adenocarcinoma in the stomach remains a mystery. But the risks are increased by factors such as smoking, long-term inflammation of the stomach, genetics, poor diet, obesity and lack of physical activity.

The poor diet refers to a lack of essential nutrients that are commonly absent in foods such as convenient, processed and fast foods and present in fruits and vegetables. The Western diet is never without the convenient foods and rarely contains fruits and vegetables.
