Choosing And Using Metatarsal Pads

Metatarsal pads have helped many women endure the pain of extended periods in high heel shoes. Though metatarsal foot pain is not necessarily a problem for women who wear high heeled shoes. It can affect runners too, and there are metatarsal foot pads for runners that are of help. But before we can talk of metatarsal pads, we really need to understand what is metatarsal pain, otherwise known as metatarsalgia. Metatarsalgia is ball of foot pain, the soft pads just behind your toes. This is the opposite of heel pain which is at the back of your foot. You will often experience burning sensation there or feel like you are walking on a pebble.

Walking barefoot surprisingly can aggravate the pain. And this is not a problem only for women who wear high heels. Metatarsal pads for runners offer amazing relief for those runners who suffer form this painful condition. However, as always, a pound of prevention is better than an ounce of cure.

Metatarsal pain can often be alleviated by simply choosing to use metatarsal pads when walking in your shoes or when standing for long periods of time. Additionally, sometimes you might actually need an orthotic for your shoes or a custom made arch support insert. For runners, the problem may be more severe especially if you suffer a metatarsal stress fracture which usually occurs from runners constantly landing on the balls of their feet and not their heels or full foot.

If you find that you get relief from metatarsal pads then you’ve obviously found the treatment for your metatarsal foot pain. However, if metatarsal gel pads do not relieve the symptoms or only marginally at best, then your best treatment is rest and ice. Ice the ball of your foot a couple of times a day for 15 minutes at a time. I like to put an ice pack on for 1 minute and then let it off for 1 minute and do this for 15 to 20 minutes twice a day if you can. You don’t need to alleviate your feet but lying or sitting as often as possible throughout the day can help. If this doesn’t improve your metatarsal pain in conjunction with metatarsal pads then you need to see your family doctor and perhaps a podiatrist too.
