Easy Household Maintenance Tips

When you own a home there are just certain things that need to be done on a regular basis. These household maintenance tasks are vital to keeping your home in great shape and may even save you money in the long run by extending the life of items in the home. The following are a few tips to get you started.

Drains:

We usually do not think of the drains in the home until there is a problem. With a little inexpensive maintenance you can eliminate the majority of plumbing issues in the home. First, try only sending water down sink drains. Even with a disposal you want to be careful with what you send down. To keep your drains in great shape pour a half cup of salt, half a cup of baking soda, and a cup of vinegar into the drain. Let it sit for 10 minutes and then send a quart of boiling water down the drain. Do this once a month to all the drains in the house and you should have little plumbing problems.

Carpet;

Carpet is one of the first things people see when they walk into your home. You should have your carpets professionally cleaned at least once a year with a low moisture cleaning system. Prices can vary greatly from cleaner to cleaner so ask for several references from friends and neighbors and call them all to get a feel for carpet cleaning prices in your area. Also, to keep the carpet maintained between cleanings be sure to vacuum at least twice a week to keep soil from building up. Small cordless vacuum cleaners can be handy for taking care of small spills. Find a good residue free cleaner and clean spots on the carpet as soon as they are noticed.

Hard Floors:

If you have a combination of hard flooring in your home, such as hardwoods, tile, linoleum, or laminate, it can be a chore trying to use different cleaning methods on all of them. Instead, get a steam mop! These mops are safe on all floors and do a great job cleaning. Most have washable cleaning pads which save money on cleaning products and mop heads.

These are just a few ways you can keep your household running like a well oiled machine. Instead of continuing to put off maintenance tasks around the home do a little investigating and see what else can be streamlined in your house.
