At a time when the cost of electricity is rising all over the world because of the rising cost of production, many different ways to save money on electricity are emerging.
But before opting for any one method, it would be a good idea to have a home energy audit done to assess your power consumption, which you can either do yourself, as many people opt to do, with an inexpensive handheld power meter that costs as little as $20 – $40 or, better still, have a professional from a local utility company or your local government or some other agency do for you for better results in terms of more precise measurement and expert advice. If you are lucky, you may even get a free audit depending upon your locality.
Once you identify the appliances that are hogging more power than you think they should – and some of your findings may actually surprise you – you can take appropriate measures to reduce power consumption at home, such as replacing incandescent light bulbs with CFLs that consume far less energy, and turning off appliances and unplugging batteries when they are not in use. Many people have the wasteful habit of leaving appliances, such as printers, speakers, chargers and even computers switched on all the time – and they are not even aware of it.
If you wish to take a step further and make your own contribution to the reduction of carbon emission, you could even take a walk or bicycle to work at least one day a week instead of driving. The worldwide concern for global warming and the ongoing effect of the global financial crisis makes this the right time to do so.
However, if you really want decrease your electricity cost substantially – while consuming the same amount of power – then there are better ways available. If you are the sort who wants to be in sync with the changing times, then you could go for one of the emerging new technologies that are more environment-friendly and cost-effective in the long run. And by far the best option available in the market today is solar power for homes which includes solar electric system and solar heater, among other things. They are completely clean, green and safe and can free you from monthly electricity bills forever, although you may find the initial cost of installing solar panels quite high.
